Off again with the Norfolk Hannams - this time a two part sojourn to the Peruvian Andes and then Ecuador and the Galapagos Islands. Yes, Sue and I have done both before, but we rated both so highly on the previous trips (2007 and 2010 respectively) that we jumped at the chance to revisit with Jo and Peter.
Moving day, and we are awoken to gunshots and loud speakers at 7:45am. There appears to be a large military parade taking place in the square, but this IS Peru and they love their parades.
Over breakfast on the roof terrace conversation turns to the drive up into the Andes and our next venue at 3427 metres (11243 ft). Jo wants to join the 2 miles high club, as long as Peter can get an oxygen mask!
Due to a lack of free time on this trip and the travelling being rather bumpy, I'm beginning to fall somewhat behind with the text part of the blogs. So, in the meantime, I'll upload the photos and let you know when I've caught up with the description.
We had two nights at the hotel attached to the railway station at Ollantaytambo. Originally scheduled as a rest before venturing up the valley to Machu Picchu, we arrived at celebration time.The pictures say it all:
